CASTING
2018

Like contemporary art in general, Denise’s artistic production was characterised by a cross-boundary relationship between different media. In connection with the exhibition Casting at the Stockholm gallery CFHILL in 2018, she started out from a collection of smaller sculptures of varying origins and ages which she processed into new casts, using them to create new constellations of sculptural connections. The exhibition title Casting refers to the physical casting process and the casting of roles, as well as to the role or the new context that the original sculptures were given in Denise’s photographic imagery.

At the centre of her imaginary world we find, as so often before, a female figure who this time has the character of a magician, an artist or a curator who seems to wield power over the existence of the sculptures. In the photographs, several of her sculptures appear as protagonists in contexts similar to those of a science fiction film, which is accentuated by a photographic technique called solarisation, which imbues the photographs with a metallic definition. The photographic series Casting dissolves the boundaries between physical reality, fiction and artistic media in an attempt to make visible artists’ possibilities to manipulate reality in their artistic practice.

Denises konstnärliga produktion har likt samtidskonsten präglats av ett gränsöverskridande förhållande mellan olika medier. I samband med utställningen Casting på CFHILL 2018 utgick hon från en samling mindre skulpturer av olika ursprung och tidsåldrar. Hon bearbetade dem i nya gjutningar som hon använde för att skapa nya konstellationer av skulpturala samband. Utställningens titel Casting refererar både till själva gjutprocessen och till den roll eller det nya sammanhang som de ursprungliga skulpturerna fick i Denises fotografiska bildvärld.

I centrum av hennes imaginära värld finns, som så ofta tidigare, en kvinnlig gestalt som denna gång har karaktären av en magiker, konstnär eller curator som tycks ha makten över skulpturernas existens. I Denises fotografier förekommer ett flertal av hennes skulpturer som huvudrollsinnehavare i sammanhang som närmar sig en science fictionfilm. Det accentueras av en fotografisk teknik som kallas solarisation, vilken ger fotografierna en metallisk skärpa. Casting är en fotografisk svit som löser upp gränserna mellan den fysiska verkligheten, fiktionen och mellan konstnärliga medier i ett försök att synliggöra vilken möjlighet konstnären har att manipulera verkligheten i sitt konstnärliga skapande.
