I Follow the Sun

Sunflowers in Art: 1889-2024
June 29, 2024 – January 5, 2025

Few flowers have a role as mythic in art history as the sunflower. The motif attained iconic status with Vincent van Gogh's still life from 1888–1889, and it is known to the public like few other works. But the sunflower appears in art in considerably more ways than through van Gogh. Since the early 17th century, the sunflower has been a dense symbol and a dynamic motif for numerous artists – and still is today in the diverse forms of contemporary art. I Follow the Sun approaches this rich art-historical tradition with curiosity concerning the affinities and connections that arise when focusing on how the sunflower has evolved as a motif.

About the Exhibition

I Follow the Sun examines the history of the sunflower from an international perspective through painting, sculpture, and photography. The exhibition leaps from Michael Ancher's Pigen med solsikkerne and Carl Larsson's Sjutton år, made at the turn of the century, and continues with Emil Nolde's expressionism and Anselm Kiefer's historically laden, withered sunflowers. Contemporary interpretations of the motif are explored in paintings by Clara Gesang-Gottowt, Tal R, and Edit Sihlberg, but also take a conceptual turn with Ai Wei Wei's thousands of handmade sunflower seeds. In I Follow the Sun, the sunflower becomes a central figure and a focal point where many perspectives on art, nature, and human existence converge.
