There are many affinities between the pictorial series Dear Prudence and Figure Out. One example is the exaggerated colour scale. In contrast to the abstract landscape in Dear Prudence, the scenery in Figure Out is of a physical nature, featuring an unmistakable topography with sandy beaches and views of the sea. Photographed in Skagen, Denmark, the setting is evocative of the landscapes of the German Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich. The site scouting was initiated in conjunction with Denise’s participation in a contemporary celebration of Friedrich in an exhibition at Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Into this art-historically overloaded landscape, Denise has introduced a figure that has very little in common with Friedrich’s meditative monk who gazes meditatively at the peaceful expanse of water. Denise’s figure is involved in hectic activities, possibly preparing a picnic or a photo shoot with a table as a prop. Hair and wigs play a role in this frolicsome game, reminiscent of a photographic expedition that has tipped over into chaos, making it difficult to discern a logical narrative. The title of the series, Figure Out, indicates that it is up to the viewers to engage their imagination in order to attempt to solve the enigma embedded in the pictures.

På många sätt kan man finna ett släktskap mellan bildsviten Dear Prudence och Figure Out. Det gäller inte minst den uppskruvade färgskalan som har ett ursprung i Denises användning av en digitalkamera. I motsats till det abstrakta landskapet i Dear Prudence är landskapet i Figure Out ett mer fysiskt landskap. Det har en tydlig topografi med sandstränder och hav som har fotograferats i Skagen för att hitta en plats som var besläktad med den tyske romantikern Caspar David Friedrichs landskap. Sökandet skedde i samband med Denises deltagande i en samtida hyllning till konstnären i en utställning på Nationalmuseum i Stockholm.

I detta konsthistoriskt överlastade landskap har Denise infört en gestalt som inte är särskilt besläktad med Friedrichs meditativa munkar som blickar utöver vattnet i stilla ro. Denises gestalt befinner sig i en hektisk aktivitet som om hon förbereder en picknick eller en fotografering med ett bord som accessoar. Hår och peruker utgör en ingrediens i detta lekfulla spel, som ger en antydan om en fotografisk expedition som tycks ha havererat till ett kaos där det inte längre går att utläsa en berättelse som har en logik. Bildsvitens titel Figure Out indikerar att det ankommer på betraktaren att tillämpa sin fantasi för att lösa gåtan i bilderna.
