ARTIPELAG HAS THROWN OPEN THE DOORS – SWEDEN NOW HAS A NEW MEETING PLACE FOR ART, CULTURE, AND DESIGN

The first ground was broken over two years ago. Now Artipelag has opened to the public. The opening exhibition – Platsens Själ (Genius Loci) – is an attempt to articulate Artipelag’s unique blend of nature and architecture in artistic form. The exhibition runs until 30 September.

Artipelag’s Art Hall will offer boundary-crossing exhibitions of classical, modern, and contemporary art, and their interface and relation with craft and design. The art operations include a large art hall of about 11,000 square feet with large windows facing the water. In addition, there are four smaller exhibition halls designed where slanting walls welcome the visitor. The rooms in the Art Hall are situated facing north, which offers lovely lighting for the exhibited artworks. Simultaneously, the rooms fulfil the latest requirements concerning climate, safety, and function for the exhibition of art.

Artipelag also has a 13,000 square-foot Artbox with a 39-foot high ceiling. Here in the Artbox, cultural activities such as art exhibitions, opera performances, TV-recording/ broadcasting, and banquets, can take place with an audience of up to 1,000 guests.

During opening week, the Royal Opera will perform a newly written version of a Bengt Emil Johnson libretto by composer Anders Eliasson. Opera singer Lena Hoel will perform “Karolina’s Sleep” along with musicians from the Royal Orchestra. In conjunction with Karolina’s Sleep, glass artworks by Bertil Vallien will be on display.
