The visible – Swedish contemporary photography
Past exhibition February 7 – May 11, 2014
Artipelag presented a comprehensive photo exhibition containing works from the by twenty-one photographers. The point of departure for the exhibition was the changes taking place in photography during the 1990s. As part of these changes was an increasing awareness of the theoretical foundations and an interest for the staged image rather than the documentary one. Many of the photographers in the exhibition combined the documentary image with fiction to create a narrative. In the exhibition, emphasis lied on a tendency which has been clear during the last twenty years in Swedish photography: it is women who have become the influential and the most successful photographers in Sweden from the 1990s until today. In the exhibition at Artipelag, this claim was both tested and pursued.
