Artipelag has invited curators Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano to make the first contemporary design exhibition in the art hall. The exhibition EARTH MATTERS alerts us to consider how we over-consume Earth’s resources, but also celebrates the beauty of our planet.
EARTH MATTERS – WHEN NATURAL & CREATIVE FORCES MEET
CURATORS
Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
For too long we have ruthlessly consumed our Earth’s assets and drained it of its resources. Forests become furniture, oceans are polluted and minerals are over-mined. For future generations it is crucial to consider a new reflection: a transformation from over-consumption towards sustainable development that is in harmony with nature, with increased respect for our environment and for each other.
Exhibiting contemporary design and its processes for the first time, Artipelag has invited curators Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano to create a thought-provoking show that directly connects with this subject matter and museum’s meteorological site in Stockholm’s idyllic archipelago. As Edelkoort explains, ”This young century has brought about a moment of reflection and radical change, making up for a century of ecological abuse, consumption, greed and violence. For the first time, a post-fossil society is emerging, using natural ingredients, offering alternatives and giving us hope for the future.”
Areas such as design, art, photography, food and fashion are increasingly driven by a new creative energy that is inspired by natural materials and sustainability. From land to sea, from forest to mountain, a wealth of ideas sprout from the Earth, analyzing and cataloguing its components: transformed into new materials, recycled remnants, oxidized alloys and vegetal colors.
The exhibition EARTH MATTERS alerts us to consider how we over-consume Earth’s resources, but also celebrates the beauty of our planet.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: Barnett Newman’s expression “here and now” from his essay The Sublime is Now (1948) has been employed in a number of contexts in order to accentuate a sense of presence in the experience of art. For the exhibition at Artipelag, ten artists have been invited to create site-specific artworks in relation to the architecture of the exhibition space. It is in the spatial encounter between artwork and viewer that a dialogue arises, which Barnett Newman compared to a conversation between two persons.
CATALOGUE: In accordance with the exhibition’s site-specific character, the catalogue will be published during the course of the exhibition when the works have been photographed on site.
DIGITAL MATERIAL: In conjunction with the exhibition, the participating artists will be presented in brief video portraits.

CURATORS: Bo Nilsson, Artistic Director, Magnus Jensner, Head Curator, Jessica Höglund and Frida Andersson, Assistant Curators.
ARTISTS: Rudolf Steiner, Joseph Beuys, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Marcel Broodthaers, Elis Eriksson and Per Kirkeby (historical section). Bruce High Quality Foundation, Tacita Dean, Alejandro Guijarro, Christian Marclay, Josiah McElheny & Andrea Geyer, Tal R, Lars Siltberg and Gary Simmons (contemporary section).
EXHIBITION THEME: The blackboard is associated with learning but it is less known that the blackboard has been used by artists as a medium for knowledge throughout the modern era. Rudolf Steiner is a pioneer in using the blackboard as a pedagogical tool. Steiner’s ideas had many followers, not least Joseph Beuys who was the connecting link to contemporary artists such as Tacita Dean and Christian Marclay who have continued to work with the blackboard. It may seem peculiar that the blackboard has enjoyed a renaissance in contemporary art, not as a nostalgic trip back in time, but rather as a medium for knowledge that enters into dialogue with the audience, in the spirit of interactivity.
CATALOGUE: In conjunction with the exhibition, Artipelag will publish a richly illustrated catalogue with artist presentations, designed by Patric Leo.
PRESS PREVIEW: Welcome to the press preview on Thursday 10 October at 11am-1pm. A light lunch will be served.

Summer’s Design Exhibition at Artipelag
On display in the Artbox 14 June – 21 August 2013 at Artipelag art hall, Värmdö
Curator: Staffan Bengtsson
Staffan Bengtsson is also a known TV producer of form-design programs such as K-Märkt and Bästa Formen on Sveriges Television. Most recently, he produced a K Special on new Norwegian architecture and he is currently the chief editor of the design magazine BRUNO.
Designers and architects have traditionally been inspired by nature and used wood as an important design material. Amongst Swedish designers, the popularity of wood has waxed and waned over time – culminating in the hysterical 1970s pine mania, when every kitchen table was made of a thick solid wood top and untreated pine was the finest one could have. Then, for a long period of time, wood became just about banned by designers. Pine-haters took over. But now, in the wake of ecological and environmental awareness, the woods have become house-trained and trendy again and designers – not just in Sweden but everywhere – have taken wood to new heights.
In Artipelag’s nearly 13,000 sq ft large Artbox, we let the woods into the drawing room, mix the high with the low, house with milking stool, boats with playhouses, and particleboard with hardwood. The exhibition features design objects from both relatively well-established Swedish designers in wood – such as Folkform and Jens Fager – to new, innovative rookies that have just finished their education at Konstfack (College of Arts) and Carl Malmstensskolan (Carl Malmsten’s School). Half of the designers included in the exhibition are women – a noteworthy achievement in an area of design that is otherwise normally male-dominated to the extreme.
Premiere showing of the world’s smallest house in wood, designed by Daniel Franzén.
Objects by John Kandell, who is possibly Sweden’s foremost furniture sculpture of all time, will be shown for the first time in a separate retrospective.
During summer, visitors can book a night’s stay in a tree hut – a temporary hotel room in the woods at Artipelag – designed by architects Kerstin Bernow and Andreas Wallin.
On Saturday 15 June, Cecilia Cronelid will show her “Building Pieces” where she and visitors both big and small will try to build their own unique objects in wood.

The spring exhibition at Artipelag will be with Poul Gernes and Cosima von Bonin. Their mutual history started at Kunstverein Hamburg in 2001, when von Bonin showed a work by Gernes together with her own work under the heading Bruder Poul Sticht in See (Brother Poul Goes to See). Since then, a dialogue between these two artistries has been going on, where the perspective continuously is shifted, and where it can be difficult to code who is the main character and who is the sidekick. The purpose of the Artipelag exhibition is to once again bring together works by the two artists, to further deepen the dialogue.
We would like to show how themes from the idea based art of the 1960s today are reused, reworked, and further challenged, to create a new and upgraded view on modernism, where feminism, collectivism, and mass cultural references create new possibilities for art.
The exhibition comprises a large number of works by the Danish artist Poul Gernes (1925-96,) from the 1960s until he died, while the works by Cosima von Bonin (1964) are from the last three years.

Enlightened, Artipelag Konsthall’s major autumn exhibition, comprises selected works featuring electric light by some of the world’s most influential artists. The exhibition is a visual and intellectual voyage through the art of the 1960s to the present day, and an impressive display of various lighting techniques.
In the 1960s, the concept of art was expanded in different ways and came to encompass all types of materials. Light bulbs and fluorescent lights became media that today are part of art’s repertoire. Enlightened is an attempt to demonstrate this shift, from the 1960s to the present day, utilising selected, central artworks. Light is here given physical form and is employed to expand the spatiality of the art gallery. The light should interact with the viewer but it should also be regarded on a conceptual level. It often gives expression to political, ideological and social ideas, which exist in parallel with artistic concepts. In this way, one can refer to early predecessors and, at the same time, create entirely new expressions.

The exhibition includes about 100 works spanning from 1968 up until today. Below, the artist describes the exhibit in her own words:
”The exhibition is an invitation to follow an exercise of self-examination: I attempt to identifiy – across time, across sets of motives and across the presentation forms used – common denominators of the visual memory that is guiding me.”
