You start in the pedagogical room where, through texts and pictures, you get to know more about Monet’s world, who he was, his artistry and technique, the different periods that characterized his work and much more. Information
Claude Monet showed talent at an early age. He grew up by the coast in the town of Le Havre with his family where he learned to draw from local artists who gave him private lessons. When he was 22 years old, he moved to Paris to study at École des Beaux-Arts. However, the academic approach did not suit his artistic ambitions and he moved on to apply to Charles Gleyre’s atelier. This is where he met Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley who would also become pioneers of the Impressionist movement.
The following years, Monet’s success as an artist was limited. He decided to arrange an independent exhibition together with Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro. Monet’s contribution to the exhibition was a painting of the sun rising over the port in Le Havre. He called it Impression soleil levant. The critics were skeptic and one of them satirically coined the term Impressionism, which the artists reclaimed and used in a positive sense.
There was no one unifying Impressionist style, but the artist shared a similar approach to painting. Rather than working in a studio, they preferred painting outdoors in front of their motifs. This approach allowed them to capture the fleeting impressions of natural light. They captured the sky’s changing colors, lively moments with friends, and shifts in nature with quick, visible brush strokes.
Claude Monet often portrayed his motifs in different weather, seasons, and times during the day. During the late 1800s, Monet produced several series, where the most famous one from the time depicts the cathedral in Rouen from different angles
In 1882, Monet moved to Giverny where he mainly painted his garden, its pond with water lilies, and its bridge. The 1910s were tough for Monet. His wife Alice passed away in 1911, and his oldest son died shortly thereafter. The First World War raged on, and many of his friends’ sons died in battle. Through all the hardships, Monet continued to paint. At this time of his life, his art centered around his garden, while the canvases became bigger and the strokes broader. In 1914, he started working on Les Grandes Decorations, which occupied him until his death in 1926.
